John’s first overseas trip for Intel was to the Philippines in 1997 to help set up a new SE Asia call center. While there, his company hosts for the trip were the division chief Rob Haubner and his wife Susan Miller. They took all of the visiting engineers on a road trip one weekend from Manila to the White Sand Beach in Batangas Province. On the way, we stopped to sight see at Taal lake and see Taal Volcano. Rob and Susan were murdered by terrorist in Africa a few years later while on a mountain trip to view mountain gorillas in the wild. Google their names for details; it was all over the international news back then.
